But I've still managed to find time to ride and put my kit to the test. In fact, my shipment of new &lt;a href="http://electricbikecompany.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;amp;cPath=6&amp;amp;products_id=9"&gt;Amped tube batteries&lt;/a&gt; arrived last week and I've been testing out my own battery ever since. Was it worth the wait? Definitely!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not only is this battery good looking and light, its very well designed with regards to its mounting position within the frame. Simply attach the bracket to the water bottle holes on your down tube, lock the battery in place with the supplied key and complete the required wiring. Although its not 100% plug and play, Danny's got the system pretty close - a little DIY attitude will take you far on this one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've easily shaved 10 minutes off my old 40-45 minute commute, and the sweat factor is way down. The bag that caught my interest was the Dry Dog 13" (pictured below). Its a 100% waterproof pannier that converts to a courier style bag and includes a self contained 13" laptop sleeve (the larger Dry Dog 17" - you guessed it - carries a 17" laptop). Like most commuters I've used either panniers or a back pack at some time or another. But for me niether of these options has been ideal - backpacks make you feel top heavy and can cause excessive back sweat, while panniers have always made me feel like I'm towing an anchor. And most importantly, when I get to the office none if these options seem very board room friendly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As an avid reader of the &lt;a href="http://www.ecovelo.info/"&gt;ecovelo &lt;/a&gt;blog, I've come across a third possible option - saddle bags. Of course your average saddle bag is not up to the task of carrying anything more then a spare tube, patch kit and multi-tool. For me a seat is something you just suffer with. All this has changed with my latest ride - a 2009 Giant Seek 1 - to say that the stock saddle is uncomfortable is an understatement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;Enter &lt;a href="http://www.selleanatomica.com/"&gt;Selle An-Atomica&lt;/a&gt;!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.selleanatomica.com/images/Img4172.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="214" src="http://www.selleanatomica.com/images/Img4172.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No matter what review you read about this beauty you'll always here how comfortable this saddle is. And let me tell you that they're all true. Service aside (more later), this is one comfortable ride. In fact this is the first time I've purchased an after market upgrade and felt that the company actually cared about how it was attached to my bike. When you receive your saddle it comes neatly packaged in a re-usable mesh bag complete with setup instructions that are very specific about rider/saddle position (which I have yet to use). Don't misunderstand me. I've read the directions and understand what I need to do but finding the time to do it is another story so for now I've got the saddle roughed in. However, even without the seat dialed in this is the most comfortable seat I've ever had - ever! Once I've got it dialed in and put more miles on it I'll be sure to add part II to this review.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PS - If you are lucky you may still be able to snag one of their demo saddles and save 25% off the regular price. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A note on service&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reading through the many reviews of this saddle, one thing seems to stand out. Either the service from Selle An-Atomica is excellent or completely horrible. My experience leans closer to excellent then horrible. However, if you are an international customer don't be surprised by the added charges you'll receive from their confusing online ordering system. Placing an order is a bit of a 2 step process; you need to add the saddle to your cart (step 1) then add the shipping service you require - standard or express (step 2). The problem is that PayPal (the way they have it set up) adds additional shipping charges to both items to make up for the international shipping charges. I quizzed them on this since being charged shipping for a shipping charge doesn't quite jive with me. No luck. As expected, the terry cloth thumb section designed to wipe sweat/snot proved to under perform compared to the rest of the glove and by the end of my ride my thumb was definitely colder then the rest of my fingers. The other complaint is that the portion of the glove that your index and middle finger slide into is a little long&amp;nbsp; making the transition from '2 fingers on the brake' to '4 fingers on the bar' a bit of a maneuver. This is due to the extra material hanging up on the brake lever as you move your fingers back to the bar (I purchased a LG size but could probably make due with a M - however, I don't think the size would matter in this case). I guess its the price you pay for warm fingers!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;UPDATE&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the ride home (with the same outside temperatures) the gloves definitely have a thumb issue. In fact I'd have to say that hitting -20C with these seems unlikely and you'd most likely want to wear a thin under layer if possible. As I've mentioned before I had a few concerns about the rear hubs shifting and the hydraulic brakes performance in extreme cold. At somewhere around -7C (-11C with the windchill) neither of these components presented any problems - shifting was smooth right out of the gate and the brakes seemed as responsive as ever.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought the brake levers may be slow to spring back but I didn't find this to be an issue at all. According to WikiAnswers "-30C(-22F) is listed as the freezing point for mineral oil. Due to viscosity (how thick the fluid is, basically), however, it's lowest &lt;i&gt;useful&lt;/i&gt; temperature is considered to be 10C (50F)." I knew that once the brake lines had seen some use and warmed up there wouldn't be any issues at all, but I was more then happy to discover that even at these temperatures the brakes perform as they should.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The same is true for the Alfine rear hub - I expected the shifting to be a bit sluggish to start but ease up during the ride. I can normally cover the 13km commute in about 35 minutes. Today it took me just over an hour!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Schwalbe Winter Marathons&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These tires are amazing! If you need some confidence when you ride this winter you should definitely pick up a pair of these. They may be overkill if you only ride on plowed roads but if you're like me and your commute covers a range of conditions then you can't beat a pair of these. My commute today covered everything from plowed roads to hard packed park trails to snow covered paths - not only that, I even had the chance to ride over some serious ice (there were several patches of run off that had covered the park paths creating a mini glacier effect).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Plowed Roads&lt;/b&gt; - imagine riding over bubble wrap (sound wise) - its a 'crunchy' experience. The tires roll well but tend to feel squishy in the corners which is expected. Like I said, if plowed roads are all you ride then the &lt;a href="http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.asp"&gt;Nokian A10's&lt;/a&gt; may be the better option.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Hard Packed Snow&lt;/b&gt; - No problems here at all. My only problem was related to tire pressure. In order to properly set the studs Schwalbe recommends riding 25 miles at full pressure - since I've missed my opportunity to ride on dry roads to do this I decided to only inflate them to 4 bar (5 bar max, 2.5 bar min). This is way to high for hard packed snow - my wrists and ass definitely paid the price for this!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Ice&lt;/b&gt; - Slow was my modo over the mini glaciers I came across. The studs definitely do their thing here but its still pretty scary. At one point my bike did the old sideways slide trick but I was able to recover without even having to put a foot down. On anything but studs I would have definitely eatin' dirt.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Snow Covered Paths&lt;/b&gt; - No problem at all! I rode with complete confidence. The only thing to watch out for are the slushy patches, especially on turns.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;b&gt;Clothing&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is possible to dress too warm! Seeing that the temperature was -7C I thought I should really wrap up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Top&lt;/b&gt; - My base layer is a long sleeved wool jersey, followed by a typical waffle top (also long sleeve), followed by a heavy zippered Thinsulate top followed by a thin waterproof shell. I probably could forgo the heavy Thinsulate top next time, but I wasn't sure how much heat I would generate during my ride. Needless to say I had no problems staying warm up top.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Bottom&lt;/b&gt; - My bottom layers consist of a thin base (long John), followed by a &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442617947&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302692411&amp;amp;bmUID=1263351254478"&gt;cool weather tight&lt;/a&gt; followed by a lined athletic pant (to act as a wind barrier). My legs were perfectly warm - not too hot not too cool.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Hands&lt;/b&gt; - Lets just say that my hands suffered. I wore a &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442619864&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302886890&amp;amp;bmUID=1263351465164"&gt;cool weather glove&lt;/a&gt; underneath a wool fingerless glove thinking I would stay warm while still maintaining good finger mobility. I had to stop 3 times to warm up my finger tips! New gloves are definitely on my wish list...&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Head&lt;/b&gt; -&amp;nbsp; For my head I have 3 options (all include a helmet); no cap, &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627555&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302883734&amp;amp;bmUID=1263436152903"&gt;cap&lt;/a&gt; or &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627558&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302883734&amp;amp;bmUID=1263435965809"&gt;balaclava&lt;/a&gt;. On my first ride I figured my &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627555&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302883734&amp;amp;bmUID=1263436152903"&gt;cap&lt;/a&gt; option would be fine - it has ear flaps to help keep out the cold. It didn't. The wind on my face was too much to handle so after 1 block I switched to my &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627558&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302883734&amp;amp;bmUID=1263435965809"&gt;balaclava&lt;/a&gt;. As I mentioned above, my hands suffered. Not my head! The only downside to the &lt;a href="http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627558&amp;amp;FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302883734&amp;amp;bmUID=1263435965809"&gt;balaclava&lt;/a&gt; is the effect it has on your glasses (fog). However, even at -7C the hot air created by your breath keeps your cheeks and eyes toasty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;b&gt;Other Observations&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt; I need to adjust my seat&lt;/b&gt;. The entire commute I felt like I was sliding forward - a slight adjustment should fix it. The stock saddle isn't the most comfortable anyway so a new &lt;a href="http://www.ecovelo.info/2009/07/22/selle-an-atomica/"&gt;Selle An-Atomica&lt;/a&gt; is going to be added to my wish list for sure!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Handle bar and hand position&lt;/b&gt;. Now I remember why I bought my road bike last year - a flat bar is just not comfortable. I have an extra bar similar to a &lt;a href="http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-albatross-crmo-bar/16-122"&gt;Nitto Albatross CrMo bar&lt;/a&gt; that I think I'm going to install once I can get my hands on a &lt;a href="http://jtekengineering.com/jtek_bar-end_shifter.htm"&gt;Jtek Bar End Shifter&lt;/a&gt; - I need the real estate for the Amped thumb throttle. My wrists were sore after riding through the hard packed snow, and my hands were numb/tingly after the ride.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Brake Levers&lt;/b&gt; - At -7C metal can be cold. They are longer then most with a nice rubberized flap which offer improved coverage and prevent over spray from puddles and slush. I knew I would have some clearance issues with this bike, especially in the rear due to a strange protrusion at the top of the rear triangle. Since I had fitted my bike with larger studded tires (see '&lt;a href="http://legendcycle.blogspot.com/2010/01/giant-seek-1-tire-clearence.html"&gt;Giant Seek 1 Tire Clearance &amp;amp; Schwalbe Marathon Winters&lt;/a&gt;') I wanted to maximize fender clearance in order to keep snow build up - not a problem at all on the front.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FbmjuUSTh_E/S00gRwGs2xI/AAAAAAAAAoY/8qgqK4WwEiI/s1600-h/photo+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FbmjuUSTh_E/S00gRwGs2xI/AAAAAAAAAoY/8qgqK4WwEiI/s200/photo+4.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"&gt;The Back is a different story altogether....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"&gt;Due to the strange protrusion in the rear, the rear fender is forced into the tire making wheel rotation near impossible (remember this is a smaller tire then the front - 35mm rear, 42mm front). Not only that, the clearance where the tire meets the chain stay is literally ZERO! Before my next ride I plan on drilling a couple of holes through the fender and clamp in order to secure everything together with a zip tie. Regardless of this issue the tire clearance for the rest of the fender is equivalent to the front.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"&gt;Another downside to this reduced fender is the spray that accumulates around the bottom bracket and the lower seat tube. To prevent this I may try to attach a spare front fender designed to attach to the down tube or figure out some use for the leftover rear fender trimmings. As you can see 35mm is pushing it in terms of safe clearance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember - those measurements you're seeing are in centimeters! Wherever possible I will include all the details in order to give the most accurate costs involved. If you need to keep your costs low try looking at something around the $500 price point. Generally its a nice balance between quality and value. For example take a look at the &lt;a href="http://www.louisgarneau.com/ca-en/product/310647/0302036/_/CITYZEN_SUB-0"&gt;Louise Garneau Sub-0&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Clothing&lt;/b&gt; -&amp;nbsp; I will try to price out specific items that I feel are a 'must have', but in some cases I either can't remember what I paid or already had the item. For example I already own some base layers (long johns and wool tops), but did buy winter riding gloves. Where ever possible I'll make notes regarding this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Annual Savings&lt;/b&gt; - Realistically I don't expect to be riding the same bike, with the same parts for the next 10 years. Things will inevitably brake down or wear out, but regardless it gives you a good idea of the cost savings you can expect in the long run. I was hoping to ride in today for the first the this year but ran out of time last night installing the new tires.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="mobile-photo"&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FbmjuUSTh_E/S0djdL8uZkI/AAAAAAAAAng/taVxnPxQrx0/s1600-h/photo-716279.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424413629265897026" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FbmjuUSTh_E/S0djdL8uZkI/AAAAAAAAAng/taVxnPxQrx0/s400/photo-716279.jpg" /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Schwalbe Marathon Winters&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As you can see the tires arrived not folded but twisted (for lack of a better word). Peter White Cycles is pretty clear about this fact on their site, and its mostly due to the bead on these tires - folding them would crimp the bead. The only downside of this is the added shipping costs involved in the larger package requirements. Also, letting these tires sit for a day or two once installed is probably a good idea since they tend to be twisted out of shape a bit - not sure I would like to hop on these right away!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately I wasn't able to ride in today because it took me longer to install them then I thought - these are substantial tires to work with and not nearly as flexible as the slicks I removed. However, they definitely look like they'll do the job. For this reason I ordered a 700c 42 for the front, and a 700c 35 for the rear. After mounting the front tire I tried to dry fit it to the rear and there is definitely no room for a 42mm version of this tire in the back (no photo but trust me!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Amped Motor&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For those interested here is a picture of the Amped motor I ordered. As you can see everything is very well packaged for shipping and all the components appear to be in perfect condition. Here in Toronto it costs $5.50 CAD round trip each day to take the bus or train - buying a metro pass doesn't save me anything since I would have to use it every work day plus the occasional weekend to make it worthwhile. Its paved, has little foot and bike traffic and most importantly keeps me away from cars. In the early morning it can be beautifully quiet. One morning in fact I had to come to a complete stop in order to let a young deer cross the path in front of me, and this is in the heart of downtown Toronto! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And this is where the debate begins. With my decision to ride through the winter I've been trying to determine if I want to stick to the bike paths or take to the streets. Fortunately we haven't had any snow yet this year but its inevitable and there is definitely lots of ice out there. First off its unlikely that the bike paths that riddle the park system will get plowed - the streets will, of course, but do I really want to risk mingling with traffic on snowy, icy roads? The paths however are more likely to form icy ruts (even if they're my own) which can be dangerous for standard mountain bike style tires. Regardless of my decision I need to get serious about my winter tire choice since the generic slicks that came with the Seek are definitely not going to cut it. Enter Peter White...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For those interested, Peter over at &lt;a href="http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.asp"&gt;PeterWhiteCycles.com&lt;/a&gt; has a great section on winter tires and has gone to great lengths to explain the pro's and con's of studded tires along with an excellent breakdown of which tires suit which conditions. Reading the info on his site has helped me to determine the winter conditions I might encounter and how best to handle them. After reading through his site several times and contacting Peter by phone, I've decided to go with the Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires based mainly on the number of studs and the placement of those studs. As Peter states on his site the Marathon's are "the perfect tire if you want one tire to do everything". And that's exactly what I need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/images/products/tires/swlwinter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="213" src="http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/images/products/tires/swlwinter2.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 700c versions have 240 studs and come in two sizes; 40mm and 35mm. Since the Seek 1 has some minor clearance issues in the rear, I've opted for a 35mm rear and a 40mm front - a combination that happens quite frequently according to their staff. The studs to the side of the tread will help me in the icy ruts should I choose to stick to the bike paths, with the center studs helping out on the ice if I need to take to the roads. The only other option for me were the Hakkapeliitta W240's but I felt they were too aggressive for the type of riding I plan on doing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope to have a detailed review of these tires once they arrive and I can get them on my rims.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Note: Shipping to Canada&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Peter White seems to be very much aware of the issues Canadian customers face ordering products online. In order to keep costs low and brokerage fees to a minimum you can opt to ship via USPS (United States Parcel Service) as opposed to UPS. When it arrives I'll be sure to take some photos of the package etc. in order give everyone an idea of the product.&lt;b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;One thing to note &lt;/b&gt;- the geared motors only come on 26" rims. At this point I haven't decided if I'm going to re-lace it to a 700c rim for my Seek 1 or put a new fork on my old Raleigh (the original one doesn't offer enough clearance for the motor). The folks at &lt;a href="http://ampedbikes.com/"&gt;AmpedBikes.com&lt;/a&gt; seem to have put a lot of effort into their product while keeping the price within reach. They recently announced a high efficiency disc compatible geared hub making it the perfect match for my new S&lt;span style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;eek 1. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;b style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"&gt;Its a &lt;/b&gt;&lt;b style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"&gt;350W-450W &lt;/b&gt;&lt;b style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"&gt;brush-less Geared motor weighing 9lbs and capable of 20 m/h (32 km/h) and a stated range of approx. 15 miles (2-3x that if you pedal as well).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"&gt;On battery power alone I should be able to get to and from work on a single charge - of course this is the worst case scenario since I plan on pedaling my entire ride in order to stay fit. In fact I plan on using pedal power alone for the majority of my rides home.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"&gt;What's nice about the geared motor is its ability to freewheel when not under power - their other 'direct drive' motors don't have this ability. This means I can ride my bike normally when the battery dies without fighting the motor or just leave the battery at home when I feel like a pleasure cruise. Another nice feature is the size. After my daughter was born in the summer of 2008 my cycling literally came to a halt (no sleep = no energy). When the 2009 season approached I decided to get more serious about my riding and purchased a brand new road bike to help speed up my commute feeling that a faster commute would motivate me to ride more frequently.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;My commute is just over 13 km's each way and takes me through an extensive park system that runs the length of the city. It's a great ride (mostly) with the first half running a slight downhill grade. The remainder is slightly uphill with a very short but steep exit out of the valley, and depending on the day can feel like I'm pedaling through porridge. Coming home is an exact mirror of the ride in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/2007/bikes/RB_RB_GL_Brushed_w_White_d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="150" src="http://www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/2007/bikes/RB_RB_GL_Brushed_w_White_d.jpg" width="200" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;The bike was a &lt;a href="http://www.specialized.com/zz/en/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?arc=2007&amp;amp;spid=22199&amp;amp;menuItemId=0"&gt;2007 Specialized Roubaix&lt;/a&gt; - a beautiful road bike set up with a complete Shimano 105 drive train. Previous to this I had been riding a Trek 7100 Hybrid bike but found the riding position hard on my hands, and on windy days the upright position was not the most aerodynamic. The Roubaix solved the hand position and numbness issues as well as the aerodynamics but in the end I realized I had purchased too much bike. Unfortunately I only ever put 700 km's on the specialized.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That same summer I also purchased a great pair of vintage SuperCycle cruisers (so vintage that they are actually English made Raliegh's) as a surprise for my wife. The plan was to ride them to the beach and around town during the summer months. The problem was I loved the upright riding position! From that point on I knew I wanted to sell my road bike and get back to more traditional ride.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Around the same time 2 other things occurred - I rediscovered the world of internal hubs, and also came across a great supplier of electric hub motors. This got me thinking about building a classic cruiser that had a) an internal rear hub to keep maintenance to a minimum, and b) an electric motor in order to reduce the energy required to get to and from work (my plan is to ride every day - last year that never happened because after 2 days in a row of riding I felt too exhausted to tackle a 3rd, 4th or 5th day). Either the bikes are too expensive or not readily available (I live in Toronto). But I came across a &lt;a href="http://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-CA/bikes/lifestyle/2575/32792/?collections_id=4"&gt;2009 Giant Seek 1&lt;/a&gt; for sale at my local bike shop that fits my budget, has an 8 speed Alfine rear hub and the bonus of 700c wheels and hydraulic disc brakes.
